The media landscape of the world has changed dramatically over the last decade or so. More so in the last three or five years. What used to be a scene dominated by traditional tri-media, has, I think, begrudgingly gave way to a brand new platform – social media and the internet.
News organizations, big and small, scrambled to find their way and their place in the big, big world of the internet. Some have even closed down entire departments because there’s just no way that they could compete against news and info that’s distributed freely online. It used to be that people had to wait for the next day’s paper or the next round of broadcast to get the news. These days, it’s as easy as checking your timeline or newsfeed for the lastest goings-on from your contacts in social media.
No doubt, the landscape of news gathering and news dissemination has changed.
Davao City’s growing reputation as an awakening dragon of a city is also awakening all sectors of it. So much is happening in so many nooks around the city. I just don’t think that our friends in traditional media has enough manpower to be everywhere in the city to cover these happenings. Quite simply, someone (or a group or someones) needs to fill the gap.
That’s where we come in – digital influencers.
Don’t get me wrong here. It’s not just about “influencing”. It’s not just about being on a promotional event so we can take home loot bags and brag about being able to be the first ones to visit a store or the first ones to avail of a particular product or be the ones to be on the front row seat and have selfies with celebrities. It’s about being there and sharing what had happened with our audience and, consequently, with the world.
There’s just so much beauty and good news happening all over Davao City. The opportunities are there.
There’s a need to gather news, tell the news. We’re all part of a digital revolution and our platform is a force to reckon with. And that is why we need more influencers.
